C. i] AT YOUR DOORSTEP Once, while visiting Washin^on, D. C., and making the rounds of its many interesting spots, we made a startling discovery. To our amazement it developed that many Washingtonians with whom we conversed were et to take the time and trouble to tour the Capitol, dncoln Memorial, the White House, and the Washington Monument. In a few short days we saw more, including the fabulous Smithsonian Institute, than some Americans who live a lifetime in Washington see. Aware that the great national landmarks and shrines are close at hand, citi zens in the Capital City keep putting off their visit until tomorrow or next weex. Some die still putting it off. That’s the way a lot of New Bernians feel about Tryon Palace. The admission charge stops some, but we have no doubt that hundreds of citizens wouldn’t take the trouble to see it if admission was free. This is under standable for those who simply aren’t interested. The people we are talking about in this instance are ones who are interested but don’t get around to doing some thing about it. ^rning away from Tryon Palace, let’s consider another place worth visiting. It’s all for free, and figu ratively speaking, hardly more than a stone’s throw awav. We refer to Fort Macon—so attractive and historically important that its structure and a surrounding tract of 412 acres have long since been made a North Carolina State Park. If you’re a parent and haven’t taken your young sters down to see Fort Macon, they’ve been cheated out of an exciting experience. It’s an excellent example of the type of fortification built along the Eastern Seaboard in tne 1800’s, but departs from tradition to forecast architectural features of the 20th Century. Millions of visitors (and we do mean millions) have studied its gun-emplacements and brick walls, photo graphed its graceful arches and stairways, visited its tUUOBUm, V»»Vw VV» !Vsiite3f3(TH0S3^. powder magazines. For any newcomers to New Bern who may not know the location of this famed fort, it is on the northern tip of Bogue Island, across Bogue Sound from Morehead City and Beaufort. It is accessible by paved road and free causeway linking up with U. S. Highway 70. High dunes covered with waving plumes of sea oats, old cedars, twisted liveoaks and red-berried yaupon are the setting for a State Park that is edged by surf or sound waters on three sides.
